Chloe ran her fingers through Dewey's monochromatic fur, teasing it this way and that, fiddling nervously with first one plumed ear and then the other. She bit down lightly on her bottom lip as she watched the spaniels and retrievers strut around the grassy ring, counting down the seconds till it was their turn. She fiddled with the hem of her dress, trying to get out all of that pent up excited energy before going into the arena and took a deep breath, letting it whistle out from between her teeth. This was it. 

It was their turn, she noted as the spaniels trotted proudly back to the sidelines, their chests puffed out and their long ears flopping happily. Chloe looked down at Dewey, who looked up at her. Her nervous energy wasn't doing him any good; the pretty silver boy was like a sponge. He soaked up every ounce of his handler's emotions, wrapping them around himself like a coat until they became his own. Her nerves were his, and he kneaded his toes restlessly in and out of the grass. "Don't worry bud, we're gonna do great," Chloe told him with a soft smile, giving his up-do one last primp with the tips of her fingers. She led him out after a pretty red tabby particolour, and together they trotted around the ring, Dewey's light feet patting the ground to a chorus of her tinkling bangles. They pulled to a stop amidst a smattering of white flowers, peppered like drops of paint among a sea of bright green. Dewey looked up at her for reassurance. Had he done it properly? Did he mess up? 

No, he didn't. He grinned to himself as she whispered praises to him, and the nerves ebbed away as the judge began to move down the line.
